In 1874, with the enrollment of seventy students and under the
directions of lay teachers, St. Dominic Parish began its parochial school in an old wooden house. In 1883, the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary began teaching in the basement of the Church and did so for nine years. In 1892, the erection of the first school building took place. Due to increased enrollments, additional buildings were erected in 1914, 1950, and 1957. Our first pastor, Reverend John Dominic Berrill, O.P., was a member of a religious community called the Dominicans who were founded by St. Dominic. Hence, our parish and school bear the name of this great saint. "Dominic" was a renowned preacher who by his teaching and example spread great devotion to the Blessed Mother. |
